Average review score:

Idaho Discovered
As a native Idahoan, this is the first book I have ever found that truly represents the entire state. Idaho is a very diverse landscape and a huge area to cover by any means of transportation. Kirk Anderson's commitment to intimately discover and share his Idaho journey is a gift to all who know or wish to know this beautiful state. The photography proves to be of the highest caliber. Great !

Spectacular Idaho!!
This is a spectacular collection of photographs of one of the most beautiful places you can imagine...Truly "God's Country ", Idaho's diversity has been captured by Kirk Anderson in a magnificant volume showing the mountains, waters, and deserts of this special part of America. He has truly "discovered" Idaho!!

A truly remarkable photographic compendium
Idaho is a state of geological extremes that range from a desert moonscape to towering mountain peaks, to urban city landscapes. Photographer Kirk Anderson fully and vividly documents the diversity and beauty of this diverse and sometimes surprising state through a spectrum of color photography that presents memorable (and often artistic) portraits in its celebration. Idaho Discovered is a volume of spectacular, informative, entertaining, and highly recommended images that work wonderfully well to showcase the diverse landscapes. The accompanying texts by Frank Rowland and Clarence Stilwill are excellent frameworks supporting a truly remarkable photographic compendium.

Death of an Eagle
Published in Paperback by Howling Wolf Creations (November, 1998)
Author: Kirby Jonas

Kirby Jonas is definitely the best!
It was great to see James Drury's name again. There are still some of us fans left, I guess. He's definitely teling the truth too. I read Death of an Eagle, and it is great from the first page on. How can anyone write such a good story? There is a bear attack from a huge grizzly bear right away, and the main character fights that bear heroically. It was so much like I was fighting it. You can't believe the depth of these characters and how close you get to them. You don't want to let them go. Bring back more of these people, Kirby Jonas! Bless you for writing a book I can read to my eight-year-old or loan to my mom. We've needed a good clean western writer since Louis L'Amour died, and now I've found one better!

Everyone will love this book!
I read Kirby Jonas's The Dansing Star, and I didn't think a better book could come along. Then I read Death of an Eagle. I don't know if it's actually better. But it's different. Refreshing, and happy and sad. It brings out every emotion you can feel, bar none. The ending of this book is so sad, but it shows how life was back then, and the changing of the west. Still, good always triumphs in a great book, and Death of an Eagle has to be among the top books from the who I consider the best Western writer who has ever lived. They call Kirby Jonas the New Louis L'AMour. I loved L'AMour's stuff, but Jonas is FAR better--more historically accurate, and more full of detail and emotion.

The top western!
I read Death of an Eagle after being introduced to Jonas's books through THE DANSING STAR. I didn't think Jonas could get any better, but now I don't know. I'll have to cast my vote for this one. I've read Louis L'Amour all my life, and he was always my favorite author. One of the other reviewers said Kirby Jonas is called THE NEW LOUIS L'AMOUR, and that fits. But he's actually better than L'Amour. His character development is complete and tremendous! What a super book! My favorite western of all time--a match for SHANE.

An Enduring Legacy : The Story of Basques in Idaho
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Nevada Pr (August, 2000)
Authors: John Bieter and Mark Bieter
Average review score:

The Basque Diaspora
The Brothers Bieter have written a very important chapter in American immigrant history. It boggles the mind to comprehend the forces that brought young men to America from a primarily maritime economy and succesfully transplanted them in the high deserts of Idaho and Nevada as sheepherders. How a network of friends and relatives immigrating over four generations were able to bring their culture's music, dance, games, gastronomy and traditions, adapt them to new circumstances and see the pride exhibited by their children and grandchildren is truly inspiring. The evolution of immigrant Basques into Basque-Americans is a worthy study for any anthropologist, linguist or sociologist.

A very good introduction to Basque America
I just finished reading this book. It is a relatively quick read, something I was able to finish in a day. It is a very good read, though, something all decendants of the Basque immigrants to the Western US should read. It gives, in my opinion, a very good idea of what it was like for a young Basque to come to this country and try to make a living. It also describes well the choices the decendants of these immigrants have made to continue the Basque culture. It does so in a very direct way, making me think about my choices and the convenience of the aspects of Basque culture I have chosen to keep alive for myself. In some areas, I wish there was more depth (for example, the discussion of Anaiak Denok, a group I hadn't heard of before), but, overall, it is a very good introduction to what it means to be Basque-American and why some of us choose to identify with both the Basque and American culture. I strongly recommend this book, not only to Americans of Basque decent, but anyone who is interested in the issues of ethnicity in America and why some would choose to be both American and ethnic at the same time.

Extremely well done
As an amature student of both history and Basque culture I am very impressed with the quality of this work. Both Misters Bieter should be praised for what is both a most interesting and informative book. There is a professional blend of historical theory about the roles of various generations and historical facts and manifested by the various stories, all held together by the ongoing saga of the Bilbao family. This is good history writing. I don't know if this kind of book can win prizes or awards, but if so this one deserves to do so.

Idaho for the Curious: A Guide
Published in Paperback by Backeddy Books (June, 2003)
Author: Cort Conley
Average review score:

should be on bookshelf of every northwest native
Cort Conley is to Idaho what Frank Dobie is to Texas. There is no man who has seen more of the Idaho landscape and backcountry, and known more of the Idaho people than Conley. And few people (if any) can tell you more about Idaho's underappreciated history and Indian lore. This book should be on the bookshelf of every native to the Pacific Northwest, alongside Evie Litton's Hiking Hot Springs of the Pacific Northwest (they just look good together).

Idaho -- It's not a confession, it's a state
Let's face it - what about Idaho DOESN'T make you curious? Whether it's the state capital Boise, or their infatuation with potatoes, Idaho has always been one of the more unusual states.

Well, thanks to author Cort Conley's vivid descriptions of the lush landscapes, and the colorful people that populate this great state, Idaho is well on its way to becoming much more than just "the state next to Montana".

As long as there are imaginative travel-authors like Conley around, Idaho will not be forgotten.

Idaho for the Curious
A wonderful compilation of just about everything you would want to know about Idaho, complete with maps and 330 photographs. Divided up regionally and then by highway miles, read facinating tidbits of information about every nook and corner of Idaho.

Cecil Andrus: Politics Western Style
Published in Hardcover by Sasquatch Books (September, 1998)
Authors: Cecil Andrus and Joel Connelly
Average review score:

Real Politics
If only Nevada could get this caliber of politician.

Idaho hasn't always been this way
Politics Western Style should be required reading for every voter or future voter in Idaho and Washington. Andrus' book is rare among political memoirs; he relates his experiences while not overinflating his role. The book is written in a style that befits Idaho's last Democratic governor, humorous, insightful, and never too urbane. Before he was "The Guv" Andrus was a logger, and his writing demonstrates the intelligence of the man while never, as they say in West Virginia, "gittin' 'buv his raisins". While not every Idahoan agreed with Andrus, they voted for him because, just like his book, Andrus stayed true to who he was. This book provides not only good stories, but a roadmap to responsible government. Read it.

Awesome! Totally Awesome!
Well...I was assigned to read this book for my poli sci class and at first, thought it was going to be boring...boy was i wrong;) This book is great! It bears down in detail the things Andrus fought through while being the Secretary of the Interior under President Jimmy Carters cabinet. It also tells you the environmental issues that he fought through to preserve things such as the spawning grounds for salmon and a lot more. Anyways...If I where you, I'd read this book. It rocks!

Mike, thanks for being in touch with all God has given us, his hand is surely on your shoulder. It is so nice to find hope, instead of doubt and despair within the pages of a book, again thanks Mike.

An entertaining and insightful work.
This book is full of insights into how our relationship with animals and the wilderness are a reflection of man's relationship with his fellow men and the larger world around them. The stories are humorous and sometimes emotional. They weave for us great insight into a man who loves people, animals and nature. Mike's love of dogs and his insight into training them can be a help to anyone who wants to know the best way to treat all living things. He is kind and considerate of both man, animal and nature. I applaud this book and the man who wrote it.

Fly Idaho!: A Guide to Adventure in the Idaho Backcountry
Published in Paperback by Q.E.I. Publishing (November, 1998)
Author: Galen L. Hanselman
Average review score:

An invaluable guide to flying Idaho's backcountry airstrips.
Idaho is the best state of the lower 48 in providing access to the wild and rugged backcountry by air. Anyone planning to enter these exciting areas as pilot of their own aircraft should make Galen Hanselman's excellent tome REQUIRED reading for preparation for such a trip. The author provides TWO color photos of each strip, with all the pertinent information you'll need to know for safe utilization of these strips. He also includes excellent informational reviews of what facilities are available, what to see, where to go, etc., as well as historical background of the area. He also has developed a Runway Hazard Index that allows a pilot to judge whether any specific runway might be beyond the capabilities of either the pilot or the aircraft.

Plainly spoken, don't enter the Idaho backcountry by air without Mr. Hanselman's book unless you grew up flying there.

Fly Idaho: A Guide to Adventure in the Idaho Backcounty
Unparalleled. No other aviation book or collection offers as much advice and detail about Idaho's back country airports. This includes all the dirt stip airports that one can land a plane on. Whether you should or not depends on you. Handy size, so you can take it with you.

I'd rank it up there amoung the best.

The best backcountry flying guide
Fly Idaho is the most comprehensive book about flying the Idaho backcountry. I couldn't imagine flying to Idaho's bush strips without it.

The book includes a detailed description of each airstrip, along with a general area photograph, a final approach photograph, and list of activities in the area. The book is invaluable in selecting which airstrips to visit and what to do once you get there.

The Shepherd's Voice
Published in Paperback by Waterbrook Press (18 July, 2000)
Author: Robin Lee Hatcher
Average review score:

This book can renew your faith in the Lord!
Convicted for a crime he didn't commit, Gabe Talmadge returns to his hometown of Ransom, seeking the love denied to him by his father Hudson Talmadge. Instead of finding the love of his forsaken father, he finds the love of Akira Macauley, owner of the sheep farm, Dundreggan. Gabe also discovers the love of another father, his Heavenly Father. Akira teaches Gabe about love and faith, and he realizes his biggest mistake was forsaking the Lord, several years ago. When he's again mistakenly arrested for a crime he didn't commit, his faith in God is tested, and he learns that it's imperative to always lean on the Lord.

Entertainment and redemption too!
Robin Hatcher adds yet another compelling story to her growing body of works in The Shepherd's Voice. Gabe Talmadge is the wandering soul in search of a home and a place to belong and he finds it in the heart of every reader who reads this enthralling tale, a story that proves that God's redemption is available to all who ask. Hatcher's proven skill at writing compelling, best-selling romance is enriched and enlarged in The Shepherd's Voice.
Patricia Hickman author of Katrina's Wings

Great reading--Wonderful storyline!
Robin Hatcher's THE SHEPHERD'S VOICE is a sober portrayal of Depression era realities with spiritual truths entwined through her well-developed characters.

Akira Macauley believes God answered her prayer for hired help on the sheep ranch her grandfather has left her in Ransom, Idaho, when she finds a penniless vagabond collapsed on the road. With trust in that belief, she hauls him back to the ranch and helps him to regain not only his health, but also his lost faith. The unfolding story of Gabe's tainted past, his life as a convicted murderer, and his struggle to regain his lost faith holds the reader captive. The plot twists and turns test the faith of both Akira and Gabriel and challenge their growing relationship while presenting, with brutal authenticity, a picture of life during Depression years.

Hatcher builds the romantic relationship between Akira and Gabe Talmadge's through worldly realities to a credible happily-ever-after ending in a way that every romance reader will find endearing. Some readers may be discomforted by Robin's strong presentation of Akira Macauley's faith or Gabe's struggle to regain a relationship with God, but her genuine warmth and distinctive writing style make that faith a believable, integral part of their story. Your heart cannot help but be touched by the romance, the spiritual truths, and historical setting. After reading The Shepherd's Voice, you'll understand why this author has received so many writing awards.

The Big Burn
Published in Hardcover by Harcourt Children's Books (01 June, 2002)
Author: Jeanette Ingold
Average review score:

Excellent historical fiction!
Ingold tells the reader that if you talk with anyone in Idaho or Montana for long enough, the subject of the Big Burn will come up, and the person telling you about it will expect you to know all about it. After reading Ingold's well-researched book, any reader would be able to contribute to the subject. Set in 1910, when forest rangers were new, railroads were huge, and immigrants were still flooding the country, The Big Burn tells the story of the wild fires of the northwestern United States. Ingold gives us three main characters: Jarrett, Lisbeth and Seth. These teenagers each deal with the fire in their own way, and find that there is more to fighting fires than a little water or ditch digging. The three do meet in the tale (it is plausible), and each tell their view of the events in concurrent chapters. Ingold breaks in with facts and accounts of actual events, which makes the fictitious story feel all the more real.

Ingold has done her homework, and it shows in the story. Her afterword, acknowledgements, and list of suggested reading at the end all provide valuable information. The only problem I had with the book was a bit of charaterization--the relationships between the characters felt forced and unbelievable, particularly the budding romance between Jarrett and Lisbeth. On their own, the characters were strong, interesting, and contributed to the story. But when they came in contact with the others, even the minor characters became a bit forced in the relationships in which they were observing or participating. Otherwise this is a wonderful example of great historical fiction.

The Big Burn.
Tittle The Big Burn, author Jeanette Ingold. The Big Burn was a sad story. The setting of the story was in 1918 in Idaho. The main character in the book were Lizbeth because she saves her aunt from the fire. My favorite part of the book is when uncle Mark saves Lizbeth from the big fire and Lizbeth died cecause she had got burned. In this book you can really picture the sights and smells during the catastraphe. I would recomend this book to kids that are in 8th grade because this is a book that kids under 13 might not understand because this book is so sad at the end.

Good Dirt II - The Mountain Bike Guide to Sun Valley, Idaho
Published in Paperback by Perpetual Motion (01 May, 2001)
Author: Greg McRoberts
Average review score:

Excellent book with many awesome rides.
This book is laid out well with concise and accurate information about many wonderful mountain bike trails. The rating system, general description and mile by mile directions are very good. The only reasons I don't give it five stars is that the trail names in the book don't always match the trail names on sign posts (we got lost). Maybe they've changed the signs since the book was published. Also, the grid indicating elevation gain is a bit misleading. You can't compare one ride to another using their grid system. We used this book for 4 different trails in Sun Valley and one near Stanely and really had fun. Believe them when they classify a couple rides as "abusive".

Best mountain bike guide I own!
The authors actually thought of everything in this book, aside from GPS points. It has it all, comedy, details and more details. I've read many guidebooks over the years and this one is definitely one of the best. From tons of rides in every ability level, to lodging, camping, eats and extra curricular activities. Don't think about, just buy this book and go to Sun Valley mountain biking!!

Outrageous!!!!!!!
This guidebook sets the standard for other guidebook authors to follow. Clear, concise and accurate information at your fingertips! Good Dirt rocks!
